News Sushi: Morsels of News from Japan and Beyond #17

Editor Note: It is Friday and that means it is time for the World Famous, soon to be Intergalactic Famous, News Sushi from our very own, Hamish Downie. He brings us a decidedly different slant on Pop Culture as viewed through the lens of a non-native living in Japan. Thank you Hamish for your insights.

When I was 17…

At Seventeen…

And a K-Pop band called Seventeen:

I’ve got a lot to live up to…

Wish me luck!!

DJ Mistress Macarbe… play that Jam!

I’ve started a new love affair with twitter. It’s so great for joke accounts like this (especially now that visage-tome takes itself so seriously)… here’s an account dedicated to bad screenwriting advice, and it’s golden!

Some Lovecraft for breakfast anyone?

While we are at it…

And now for my favourite vegans…

Why?

(for the people who don’t get it – many of the creators in the following story are vegans – I know this, because one is a friend of mine…)

Series finale for web series “Scary Endings”

You might remember me talking about this series with Adam J Yeend in a former column, but unfortunately, it has come to an end. If you’d like to hear more as to why, then follow the link to an interview with the director: http://www.thterrortime.com/movies/horror/director-talks-the-series-finale-of-scary-endings-horror-anthology/

As for now, we can enjoy the last episode:

Let’s support this series and hope that there are more to come! Maybe!

Syo! Just because!

I’ve talked about Syo before, as he did a scene in my upcoming feature film… and he just is a funny guy:

City of Night…. Finished!

In case you were wondering, I’ve finally finished reading John Rechy’s tome, “City of Night”. I was surprised to learn that it was a novel, because it reads so realistically. I guess that’s the genius in the work. If you read the comments of one of my previous updates, my friend Jody commented about how masks are something that some of us cannot take off, no matter how we try, because masks are often things that others put on us. Such as when we only see a person as one thing, not the vast array of human experiences and feelings that we all have. It’s how we as a society can lock children away in detention centres, and you have people saying that they are away at summer camp. I realise that summer camp can be hell, especially if you go to Crystal Lake, but that is some serious cognitive dissonance and masking of the truth.

As for the book itself, well, it teased a happy ending where our hero finds love, only to rip the rug out from under our feet. It makes for a disappointing ending. But, then, that’s the politics of the author, who would go on to write “The Sexual Outlaw” and write that gay men sleeping around was an act of political defiance. The author himself, who continued street hustling even as his books became best-sellers, eventually found love on the streets. And at the age of 70, or so, was in a happy relationship. Still, I personally found his life so empty and sad, especially the life of the hero of “City of Night”. But, it’s that self-loathing that made the book so hard to read, because I know how president it still is in the community. Like the people in the LGBT community who refuse to watch RuPaul’s Drag Race because it’s too gay. But, I’m just as bad, because I refuse to watch the rebooted “Queer Eye” – but, that’s largely because I hoped that we were beyond being accepted by the mainstream as helpful servants.

What are your thoughts? What LGBT book should I read next?
