Recently Martin Freeman talked about a possible “one-off” Sherlock special, much in the same way that Doctor Who has had its special episodes (usually around Christmas holiday). Well it appears that Martin knew what he was talking about.
“Miss me?” #Sherlock, the hit @BBCOne drama, will return for a Special, followed by a series of three new episodes. #221back
This is the tweet that was read around the world on July 2, at 2:21 PM announcing not only the special episode of London’s super sleuth, but also that the series would be returning for a fourth season.
In what is referred to as “record breaking run,” creators Stephen Moffatt and Mark Gatiss announced, “Series Four! At last! It’s always special to return to Sherlock, but this time it’s even more special as we’re doing… a Special! Not only THAT, we’ll then be shooting three more episodes which will take Sherlock and John Watson into deeper and darker water than ever before…”
Both Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are highly sought after actors in their own individual right, so trying to put together a filming schedule is never an easy task, but as executive producer Sue Vertue has said, “There was unanimous goodwill to make this work so we’re thrilled that 221b is going to be inhabited again.”
With the surprise ending that season 3 gave its viewers, it’s probably very easy to say that “the game is afoot.”
