While it’s been no secret that ever since Doctor Who returned to the airwaves with Christopher Eccleston, one of the returning ideas in the story telling has been the season long story arc, always culminating in the finale for that year. That style stayed with the series all the way through Matt Smith’s tenure as the Doctor. However, now that there is a new Doctor coming in, show runner Stephen Moffatt felt it was time to possibly change the story arcs as well.
Speaking to EW, Moffatt did confirm that “there are over-arching plotlines, but at the same time 90 percent of every episode is a stand-alone adventure.”
As for the setting for each of the episodes, Moffatt said “We’ve got quite a lot of Earth stuff this time. But it’s proper variety, and I think i’ll not tell you what’s going to be on the roller coaster in advance.”
Regarding the two part finale, Moffatt stated that while the Cybermen are indeed in the episode, it’s not strictly about them, and that fans can expect a wild adventure ride of a story.
