Spiral War: On Dagger’s Wings – A Book Review

Spiral War Dagger1Spiral War: On Dagger’s Wings is the first in a series of space books from S.F. Edwards (aka Sean From Edwards from the Slice of SciFi days).
The story is set in an alternate universe and time where there has been a major lengthy (200 years) war between the Confederation and the Galactic Federation.
There is a certain amount of universe building necessary, but is not intrusive to the telling of the story (although I may be biased as I want to know these things). Many characters are introduced in the first chapter as part of that universe building and are necessary for the background of Schan Vaughnt (commonly referred to by his nickname Blazer), and it is him this story is about. We get a glimpse of Blazer’s history as this coming of age story progresses. Along the way we meet numerous friends and would-be enemies as well as lots of interesting aliens, but I don’t want to say for fear of giving away any spoilers.
There is good character development and the science is sound. Edward’s flight and military experience really shines through in the book. You can see his passion for flying as well as get a glimpse of his experience in testing aircraft not to mention the attention to detail in some of the flight “scenes”.
I would advise anyone picking up this book to keep the bookmark for the appendix concerning times and distances handy as it can get a little confusing (although it might be just me). Other than that, On Dagger’s Wings is a good entertaining read and it goes fast. I look forward to the next installment.
