First she was in a reboot, then it was confirmed that she wasn’t. Now, in another bit of news sure to make fans dizzy, NBC Entertainment chariman Bob Greenblatt has confirmed that a Xena reboot is in early development at the network.
Greenblatt told THR, “Yes, we’re in the early stages of developing a new take on Xena and we’re looking for a writer. We want to do it.”
For some years now rumors of a rebooted Xena have been floating around which included the original executive producers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, and those same rumors suggest that NBC is looking to recapture all of the charm that Lawless brought to the character in the original series, but to also insert much of the intelligence that Katniss has in The Hunger Games, in the hopes of creating a fantasy series for the sophisticated superhero fan present in today’s generation.
Greenblatt had indicated to THR that he would love to have Lawless, who also happens to be married to Tapert, be a part of this reboot so long as it didn’t shift the focus from the overall direction of the new series. Said Greenblatt:
“We’d love to have Lucy be a part of it — if we felt that her presence didn’t overshadow the direction we take with it. I’m not sure how she could be part of it if she wasn’t playing Xena, and I don’t know if that’s a direction we’ll ever go.”
The Xena reboot is said to be looking to air in 2016.
