Ever since Mark Ruffalo has come on as Bruce Banner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans have been clamoring for a new Hulk movie in the belief that with Ruffalo starring it will help deliver the perfect film for the green behemoth, and according to ComicBookResources.com, Ruffalo has also publicly stated how he would like to take his character outside of the Avengers movies and give him the standalone feature him he so richly deserves. Sadly Ruffalo also revealed as to why there not only hasn’t been any such film, but why there currently isn’t any push to have such a film.
In a new interview with Yahoo! Movies, Ruffalo explained that, “I think they’ve been working on it. Marvel and Universal famously don’t get along very well, and so that’s working against us, definitely. But I know for a fact that everyone is holding out hope that one day we can do it. But the nature of the relationship right now, it’s a little prohibitive. And I hope that that changes, that changes with regimes, it changes over the course of time. But right now it doesn’t look particularly promising.”
Fans will recall that Universal formerly held the full rights to the Hulk on film, which led to the 2003 Ang Lee film origin for the character. However, when the studio wasn’t able to get production started on a sequel in time, the rights seemingly reverted back to Marvel Studios who produced 2008’s MCu outing The Incredible Hulk. But that film itself was still distributed by Universal – then Marvel’s general distribution partner. If Ruffalo’s take is correct, the studio may still hold some distribution rights to the franchise even after Marvel’s absorption by Disney. While Marvel Studios has made deals outside Disney’s system (like the upcoming Spider-Man films with Sony), a deal with the resurgent Universal may be a harder feat to pull off.
Would you like to see a standalone Hulk film with Mark Ruffalo? Do you think that the Disney legal team should be pushing more aggressively to get the distribution rights back from Universal?
