What Can We Expect From “Robotech: The Movie”? – article by Tom Arild Gulbrandsen

RobotechTitle1985After Sony Pictures purchased the movie rights to Robotech as a potential franchise, they went into talks with James Wan (Furious 7, Saw, Aquaman) as a possible director for the project.

Robotech was originally edited and adapted from three separate Japanese animated series (The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA) in 1985 for broadcast into a three-part show simply named Robotech, and was written by Carl Macek. Robotech notably became the first Japanese Anime show to be released in the U.S. and Europe, and Macek’s work made anime shows more accessible in the U.S. and throughout the rest of the world.

So what we can expect to see in this upcoming movie?

For starters, a 3,970 foot long alien spaceship crashes on Earth, is rebuilt and is capable of transforming into a giant robot, and by using its technology humanity builds fighter jets that can transform into human piloted robots, as well as other human controlled mechs and weapons designed to protect the Earth from any hostile aliens. On the day the ship SDF-1 is launched our heroes find themselves fighting an armada of battle cruisers and 20-meter tall aliens known as the Zentraedi who are hell bent on reclaiming the alien war ship. However the Zentraedi aliens find they headed for a culture shock of galactic proportions when they encounter the Earthers, since the Zentraedi themselves were artificially grown and conditioned only to be warriors and are forbidden to have any form of culture. Even physical contact between male and female Zentraedi clones is strictly forbidden.

There is a lot more to the first Robotech series known as the “Macross saga,” so if you like cartoons then check it out.

Hopefully some of the space soap opera and drama will make it into the movie. I for one can’t wait to see giant mechs and jet fighter robots battle it out in space!

  1. A few corrections to this article. First off. Robotech was definitely not the first anime to air in the US/UK. You can check here

Secondly. Harmony Gold (And subsequently Sony) only have the merchandising rights and original animation rights to these three shows. One of the shows (Macross), is still actively producing content in Japan. So Harmony Gold and Sony are not legally allowed to have any content based off the Macross series in this movie without getting sued.

So unless they completely redesign the veritech and every ship and character in the first arc beyond recognition, there will most likely be nothing from the first arc in this movie.

    1. Thank you. We are continuing to discover more as we do our research. This article was written for us as an opinion piece.
