For some time now Stephen King’s The Dark Tower hasn’t exactly been in a development hell, rather a “development purgatory.” However it’s beginning to look like it’s climbing out of that pit and into the light as names are being talked about that are attached to this film, starting off with no less than Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. The Western fantasy epic is going to be directed by Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair, Truth About Men), and the most recent name to be added is Abbey Lee who made a very splashy debut in last year’s Mad Max: Fury Road. While this does have fans excited, those familiar with the King’s book are all wondering as to who she will play.
According to SlashFilm, Lee is in talks to play the female lead role in The Dark Tower.
However there are also reports that she is going to be playing a character named Tirana, a minor character who doesn’t appear until the Volume 7 of the series, which would clearly indicate that she is not playing a lead. Of course with adaptations from book to the screen it is very possible that her character might be a renamed version of one of the more prominent characters in the series, or even possibly an amalgamation of several characters into a leading role.
For what it’s worth, though, they describe Lee’s character as “sexy and dangerous,” with “fake human skin and cold snake-like eyes.”
For the uninitiated, here’s how Jacob previously explained The Dark Tower:
The Dark Tower series takes place in a desolate post-apocalypse that contains shades of horror, medieval fantasy, spaghetti westerns, and dark science fiction. Roland the gunslinger is the last of his kind, a pistol-packing warrior/cowboy searching for the Dark Tower, the mysterious center of the universe. When he first meet him in the pages of The Gunslinger, he’s hunting for the mysterious “man in black,” the villain who destroyed Roland’s world. King later revealed that the man in black, who goes by many identities, is actually Randall Flagg, a recurring and cosmically powerful villain who rears his ugly head throughout several of his novels, including The Stand.
Lee is a model who transitioned into acting last year with Mad Max: Fury Road. She’ll be seen later this year in Gods of Egypt (which reunites her with her Mad Max co-star Courtney Eaton) and The Neon Demon. Whoever Tirana turns out to be, she could help raise Lee’s profile in a big way. The film is on track for a January 13, 2017 release, and is expected to kickstart a whole franchise of Dark Tower movies.
Are you a fan of The Dark Tower series? Do you feel this is something that can translate well to the big screen and maintain its story integrity? What about Abbey Lee herself?
