“Aquaman” to have more adventurous tone, according to James Wan

Jason MomoaJust as the first layer of dust starts to settle on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice after its opening weekend, fans are already beginning to speculate as to what Warner Bros. has in store for them with some of the solo movies. One in particular is the upcoming Aquaman that will star Jason Momoa and is to be directed by James Wan, and one of the other big questions regarding the upcoming films is what will be the tone? Will it have the gritty seriousness that Man of Steel had which was carried over into Batman v Superman?

James Wan answered that in an interview he had with the LA Times regarding Aquaman and the DC Cinematic Universe in general:

“I would love to capture the fun spirit of high-sea adventures, treasure hunts, sea monsters. That’s the spirit that I’m going for. Swashbuckling, like [director] Zack [Snyder] said, from Day One, Warner has always said to me that we are a filmmaker-driven studio and we want each of the DC characters to have the stamp and the trademark of the filmmakers that they’ve picked to come shepherd it. As I’ve always said, whether it’s at Marvel or at DC, they have that sandbox. That sandbox is in place. So you have to come in there and play within their sandbox. But the key here is to build your own sandcastle. And make that sandcastle yours.”

Warner Bros. has a growing DC Comics based film franchise that was started in 2013 with Man of Steel, and will continue with Wan’s upcoming Aquaman film. According to ComicBookResources.com, the film will “focus on Aquaman as a reluctant ruler of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis who is caught between land dwellers that are always polluting the globe and his own people who are ready to invade the surface.”

Additionally, Momoa will likely star in both Justice League films, which are scheduled for 2017 and 2019, and Aquaman is scheduled to premiere on July 27, 2018.

Do you like the idea that Warner Bros. is looking for a change in tone with Aquaman? Should the studio instead be looking for a more unified tone to help blend it in better with Justice League? How did you like Aquaman’s cameo in Batman v Superman?
