Are you the kind of geek who cannot get enough of Ready Player One? Are you always looking for more news regarding the upcoming movie? Well if you’re like the Two Gay Geeks then this news will please you as we here at TG2 Studios have just learned that Mark Rylance (The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara) has joined up with with Steven Spielberg to play the key role of James Donovan Halliday, the creator of the digial/virtual world known as OASIS.
For those who may be unfamiliar with Ready Player One, here’s the official synopsis from Amazon:
In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade’s devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world’s digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator’s obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them.
But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade’s going to survive, he’ll have to win—and confront the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.
Given that Spielberg will be directing this there is every indication (or at least anticipation) that this film will be as equally epic as the book, and the casting of Rylance is only the latest in a series of announcements regarding the upcoming film. Heading up the movie is Tye Sheridan in the lead role of Wade Watts/Parzival, Olivia Cooke as Samantha Cook/Art3mis, Ben Mendelsohn as Nolan Sorrento, and Simon Pegg as OASIS co-creator Ogden Morrow.
If anyone has doubts that any adaptation will not live up to the greatness that is the book, then have no fear for the screenplay is being written by the author of the book himself, Ernest Cline. In addition to directing the film, Spielberg is also producing via his Amblin Partners banner, along with Donald De Line, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Dan Farah.
The film was originally supposed to hit theaters in December of 2017, but with the scheduled release of Star Wars VIII, Warner Bros. decided to push the release of Ready Player One back to March 30, 2018.
More good casting? Do you like having Mark Rylance as James Halliday? Who would you have liked to see play the part? Is this a movie that Spielberg can actually make that will satisfy fans of the book and give them everything they want, or should it just be left as it is and to the “theater of the mind?”
