Are you interested in giant mechas battling it out with enormous monsters? Did you geek out when Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim was released several years ago? Are you anxiously waiting for any announcements regarding a sequel? Well your day has come because The Hollywood Reporter broke the news Derek Connolly, the co-writer of Jurassic World, has been brought on to work on the script for Pacific Rim 2 with Steven DeKnight making his directorial debut after having been the season 1 showrunner for the Marvel/Netflix series Daredevil, and del Toro is staying on as one of the film’s producers.
It is presently unknown if Connolly is doing a complete re-write or if he’s simply coming up with a brand new adaptation of the story written by Zak Penn, del Toro, and Jon Spaihts. What is known is that Connolly’s name has become synonymous with monster themed films having already worked Jurassic World as well as writing for Legendary Pictures Kong: Skull Island. He’s also skilled with science fiction having penned Intelligent Life for DreamWorks.
Pacific Rim 2 was originally scheduled for release on April 7, 2017 before being pushed to August 4, 2017 and ultimately removed from the calendar altogether. In a statement, Universal declared they were “committed to having Pacific Rim 2 though no new release date for the film has been announced.
