The trailer focuses on the film’s villain Captain Salazar, played by Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men), a powerful, merciless ghost pirate trapped in the Devil’s Triangle. There is a lot of CG on this zombie-like gang of pirates that might not appeal to longtime fans of these movies, but it’s clear why Disney decided to air this spot during the Fear The Walking Dead finale.
It’s interesting that Johnny Depp is nowhere to be found in the first teaser trailer, probably for the better considering the recent controversy surrounding the actor. Some people might think it’s a mistake to start the selling of this movie with something so serious and dark when what most people want from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is swashbuckling fun. Nonetheless, it’s probably wise to keep Depp out of the initial advertising push. Disney still has plenty of time to build up to this Pirates sequel, as it won’t hit theaters until next Summer.

How does this trailer look to you? Does it keep in the spirit of past Pirates of the Caribbean films, or does it seem even darker than what Disney has given us?
