‘The Happytime Murders’ Trailer: Prepare Yourself, These Puppets Are NSFW

STX Entertainment describes The Happytime Murders as, “a filthy comedy set in the underbelly of Los Angeles where puppets and humans coexist. These puppets are No Sesame. All Street.”

Don’t believe me? This is the .gif embedded in the press release I received May 18th:

After I finished blinking rapidly, I pressed play on the trailer link. Don’t be like me be sure to check where you are before you do.

Seriously, these muppets are strictly for grownups.

The premise is pretty straightforward: P.I. Phil Phillips (puppeteer Bill Barretta) is hunting for a serial killer who’s targeting cast members of a beloved 80s show The Happytime Gang, and other puppets as well. Forced to work with the brash LAPD Detective Edwards (Melissa McCarthy), the unlikely duo wade into the criminal underworld full of puppet sex workers, puppet drug dealers, and indeed, puppet murderers to crack the case.

This project’s been in the works for years and is a collaboration between STX Entertainment and the Jim Henson Company.  The human in this investigative duo was originally intended to be male. In 2016, STX Entertainment announced it was in talks with Jaime Fox for the lead role of Detective Edwards. The talks never came to fruition (obviously).

Director Brian Henson, the son of Jim Henson, seems to be following in the footsteps of Peter Jackson’s Meet the Feebles and moving well beyond family-friendly muppets like A Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island, with his latest endeavor.

The Happytime Murders is absolutely not for the children.
