Zachry Wheeler Releases a Max and the Multiverse Short
At that time, the only book he had available was “Transient”, a novel that gives us a different look at the Vampire mythos, and he had a number of his CD’s from his rock band days.
We bought a copy and I devoured it and was eager to chat with him.
We had him on the show and have talked to him regularly through his release of Max and the Multiverse, where I dubbed him heir apparent to the Douglas Adams writing throne, Hall of Fame, Fortune, and well…. You get the gist.
We have talked to him several times on the show. Look for links below.
Here is my look at this short story.
The Item of Monumental Importance
A Max and the Multiverse Short Story
By Zachry Wheeler
Max was released and two additional novels have been released in that series (which is great, btw). I admit that I am a little behind in my reading (should have actually done some of that on vacation) and have not caught up to the most recent Max book.
So, imagine my surprise when I see on the Facebook that he has released a short story in the Max Multiverse. It is entitled, The Item of Monumental Importance – A Max and the Multiverse Short. And it was FREE!!!! Who can resist free reading material form an author you already enjoy? I immediately clicked on the Amazon link and downloaded that puppy. It is a quick read, which I did on my lunch break.
Now, let’s get down to the important stuff. Did I like it? Absolutely, YES! Was it as crazy as I thought it was going to be? Umm, crazier. Would I recommend it to others? Oh My Gosh, yes. Will I scream it from the rooftop? Maybe not, since I don’t really trust the ladder. But if there was an easy way to the roof and I wasn’t afraid that I would fall off, then yes I would scream it from the rooftops.
First off, you don’t have to have read any of the Max books to find this story interesting. Zachry does a good job of filling in some necessary information for reference. Although, it is a little spoilerish but, nothing that you don’t see coming when you read the Max books. Which, I would encourage you to go back and get the first book if you enjoy this story. But, I digress, the story begins aboard the ship and Max retires to take a nap. And so, it begins. Max switches Universes and all hell breaks loose. He and his companions are not themselves, so to speak and they are off on a quest.
Did I say quest? Well, yes, this is an elaborate D & D quest Max has stumbled into complete with all of the silly banter you might experience around a table. There are the overly serious dedicated campaigners to the guy who says, “i’m Only here for the pizza.” Of course, there are so many tropes that he throws in, it makes it almost ludicrous and that is what spurs some of the best laughter. Yes, I did laugh out loud on several occasions. Truly, this short story is another worthy of the Douglas Adams mantle.
Zachry has said to us and in his write up for this story that he has quite a few funny shift ideas that don’t fit into the stories or further the story but, are great for a quick laugh. I hope to see many more.
