Editor Note:It is Friday and that means it is time for the World Famous, soon to be Intergalactic Famous, News Sushi from our very own, Hamish Downie. Hamish brings us a decidedly different slant on Pop Culture as viewed through the lens of a non-native living in Japan.

Thank you Hamish, for your insights.

It’s Friday!

I’ve just finished shooting an additional four days for my film, now retitled “Matcha & Vanilla”. I’ll do a proper press release soon – look for it when I’m not feeling like this…

From IMDB: “Asami Inaba is a temporary worker at a company. One day, her boyfriend leaves his smartphone in a taxi. Since then, mysterious things take place around her like her credit card bill having charges she did not place. She gets involved in a big case.”

The title for this week’s spotlight Japanese film roughly translates as “I just dropped my smartphone”, which doesn’t sound like the most exciting premise, despite the fact that if you were to (as they say in the premise) leave your smartphone in a taxi – you would completely freak out. This film is based on a novel by Akira Shiga, but what’s really going to get you excited for this one is that it was directed by none other than Japanese horror master Hideo Nakata, famed for the Ringu series, and “Dark Water”.

The film is just finishing it’s run in Japanese theatres, so look for this one coming across the pond… soon?

Movies in the making

I haven’t seen the film, but I always love finding out that practical effects are still being used. They always feel more real than CGI.

Next is our HOT LINK OF THE WEEK, which manages to be hot without showing anything… but everything at the same time 😉
