News Sushi #49: Morsels of News from Japan and Beyond

News Sushi #49

Editor Note:It is Friday and that means it is time for the World Famous, soon to be Intergalactic Famous, News Sushi from our very own, Hamish Downie. Hamish brings us a decidedly different slant on Pop Culture as viewed through the lens of a non-native living in Japan.

Thank you Hamish, for your insights.

Welcome back to News Sushi… and thank you to the person who designed the new logo… I really love it!

By accident, this became a bit of a photo gallery this week, with a touch of poetry.

I’ve been listening to Indie era Kylie, so if you have access to it, queue up “Kylie Minogue” the self titled album with the black and white cover:

and join me on this journey through the language of images. Moving or otherwise.

“The heartless coin”

Oh 50 yen coin!
Thou art not my friend –
You fool me into thinking
Thou art worth 100 yen
But, every time I visit the cash register,
you leave me red faced.

Poem by me (Hamish) – based on too many true stories.

SPOTLIGHT…

By the time you read this, we will have finished our LA shoot, and I’d like to thank Insung for his camerawork and Byron (“The Aliens” available on iTunes) for being 2nd Unit Director. And of course to Adam J Yeend for joining the cast.

So, I’d like to spotlight a short film by Insung Hwang… CACHE MEMORY

Synopsis: After an evening of passion, Rick wakes up to find that his girlfriend abandoned him in the middle of the night leaving him with only a cryptic voice message and a mysterious gift.

‘Cache Memory’ stars Luca Riemma as Rick – the abandoned fashion model, and Olivia Hultgren as Julie – the mysterious woman. This is one of the few times I’ve watched one of these “proof of concept” shorts and actually thought – I really want to watch the feature version of this. Because there are so many questions about this world that I need answered! If you like the work of Andrew Niccol (writer of “The Truman Show”, writer/director of ‘Gattaca’) then this short is for you!

The sun rises on –
the mountain, viewed from the ground –

Speaking of Tokyo… here’s episode 4 of “The Wheel”

This time we have a sweet, funny and somewhat frustrating love story between a man, a woman, and their translator! Hilarity does ensue!

Hottie of the Week

View this post on Instagram

One can describe Delhi a very chaotic city (with its crazy traffic, pollution, honking none stop), but at time it’s also a very charming city(so much colors, people are generally friendly and curious, such a simple basic life), depends on how you look at it, for instance, these pics were taken in the Old Delhi, where the culture and daily routine is still pretty much preserve in its chaotic and yet charming way 😉

Our second Hottie of the week goes to this unnamed member of the Star Wars crew, bravely standing on the precipice of the Sarlacc

I will never believe that this man isn’t in danger from r/Moviesinthemaking

Exhausted after that hard work… it’s time for a nap…
