“This is worth the drive to Peoria,” said every person who came to my Food With Fans event.
I hadn’t been in the Phoenix Metro for over a year, and I wanted to do a simple Food With Fans get together. I was staying with friends in Peoria and, after driving in from Los Angeles, knew I wasn’t going to want to drive anywhere until I had to head to Tucson. My friends suggested Don’s NY Pizza, and I’m so glad they did.
Don’s NY Pizza is a franchise, and it’s a typical pizza joint where you can eat in but also take out or have delivery. But what a pizza joint it is. The owners are fantastic and so is the food. The overflowing food. We inundated this place with over 30 people and they had a huge delivery demand hit about the same time. But we wouldn’t have known it. The service remained excellent and everyone’s orders came out correctly.
The food was great – hot and overflowing with ingredients. I got a Philly Cheesesteak and it had SO much cheese (this is a good thing in my world) and yet it also had SO much steak – I could only eat half at the event. I finished the other half back at the house a few hours later because, well, it was freaking delicious.
The calzones are the same – huge and stuffed full of goodness. They sell pizza by the slice and by the pie and everyone who had pizza enjoyed it. Basically, you can’t go wrong with anything on their menu.
The owner let us stay late if we didn’t mind him cleaning up, and he even shared brewed tea with those of us who were drinking iced tea (versus the stuff the Pepsi distributor claims is iced tea). He also gave me vacation tips for my new area of the country.
Bottom line: you won’t find nicer people who are more eager to please and who make great food at this price point anywhere. Yes, it’s worth the drive to Peoria.
Definitely Try: Calzones, Philly Cheesesteak
