I loved the first season of Cloak and Dagger, the contrasts between the main characters, their growth in both their abilities and how well they work together, how the tension and pacing escalate building to the finale. I wondered if the writers and actors would be able to continue that level of craftsmanship. Three episodes in, I find the intensity as compelling as the first season and the characters as intriguing, both in their continuing growth and in the portrayal of the excellent acting.
The second season picks up not long after the events of the first season. Ty is now living in the church evading the police, a wanted criminal while Tandy is reunited with her mother, going through therapy and mending her bond with her mother. Yet, both still have their powers and both find themselves fighting crime. Ty tackles the drug dealers, trying to stop their trafficking. Meanwhile, Tandy tries to find out why young women are missing and try to track down why. In addition, Bridget is acting strangely. Both teens try to develop their powers but it leaves the question of whether either will be successful.
What I appreciate is the way the story picks up so quickly from the previous season. There is not a pause in the pacing. We begin with Ty struggling with his changed circumstances and a need to change things for the better for the people in his city. Tandy’s desire to help is quickly presented as well. The action is fast based and the story has an immediacy to it.
The effects are equally absorbing, no pun intended as both Ty and Tandy’s abilities grow and they develop new facets to those powers. The way Tandy’s daggers glow and how she uses them is intriguing. I love how Ty’s power seems tied to the Voodoo religion of New Orleans, the connections within his own family and how he learns more as the season begins.
The acting is powerful. Aubrey Joseph as Ty is dynamic and passionate with Olivia Holt as Tandy equally emotional in her portrayal. The chemistry between the pair sells the partnership and I love the avoidance of a romantic relationship between them. Bridget as Emma Lahana as Bridget/Mayhem makes you shiver once the reveal is accomplished of her new role on the show and she does a believable job with the extra facets. Andrea Roth as Tandy’s mother, Gloria Reuben as Adina Johnson, Ty’s mother, and Miles Mussenden as Otis Johnson, Ty’s father are incredible playing off the children well but managing to keep the focus on the main characters, Ty and Tandy.
There is very little I don’t like about Cloak and Dagger and I can’t wait to see what else the season brings us. If Ty can clear his name and how the pair deal with Mayhem and the missing girls. If you haven’t caught the series, catch up on the first season and jump into the second season. I highly recommend Cloak and Dagger, a comic book pairing at it’s very best.
