News Sushi #76: Morsels of News from Japan and Beyond
Editor Note:It is Friday and that means it is time for the World Famous, soon to be Intergalactic Famous, News Sushi from our very own, Hamish Downie. Hamish brings us a decidedly different slant on Pop Culture as viewed through the lens of a non-native living in Japan.
Thank you (ありがとうございました) Hamish, for your insights.
こんにちは!Which means “Hello”!
I’m a bit late getting to this week’s blog (I’ve prepared the articles… but not actually written the parts to cement it all together…)
It’ll be a little quick this week. The GIFs this week are dedicated to the Wachowskis – masters of action – as I’ve just finished Sense8 (I’ve been putting it off, because I didn’t want to end the series I loved so much).
Here’s the first of two Joel Haver shorts this week:
From the youtube page: I was on vacation when I got these. My dad sent me these videos unprompted and told me to edit them into a movie.
What a good son!

Just when you thought the VW bug couldn’t get any more quirky… here comes the wrought iron bug…aka the wedding bug…

There’s one parked as an art piece in a mall parking lot in Kawasaki. No engine, just the frame and wheels (the plants growing inside it are part of the art installation).

How do they keep it from rusting?
In case you wondered when I would ever talk about sushi in a column called News Sushi… here’s some Sushi on a train for you.

For no reason.
Have you ever wondered which version of referring to yourself was the most desirable to Japanese women?

One caveat is that most of these are too rude to say in polite company!
Look up from your phone (note to self)!
Hiking Runyon tonight, I saw a teenager on a bench wearing a Clerks hat watching a video on his phone. Trying to surprise him, I said “I like your hat.” He said “Thanks,” without ever glancing up. I lingered for a good minute so he could finally recognize me, but he never looked. pic.twitter.com/bA7hU1BL8L

This is quite sad, but I thought that I should share it as it’s something that needs shedding light on… The missing
Had a gf whose parents disappeared one night when she was still in her teens. She and her sister were taken care of by family in town after that. Parents car was found, but they never were. It was 20 years then, nearly 40 years now. https://t.co/eiFVsUPexa
