Former SMAP member, Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, to play trans woman

We have learned that principal photography has begun on “Midnight Swan” (translated title), which will star Tsuyoshi Kusanagi (45) as a trans dancer.
From what I can understand from the Nikkei Sports article, it seems to be a “love story that depicts the shape of modern love”. While Tsuyoshi’s character (Nagisa) struggles with her gender identify, she meets a girl who hungers for paternal affection. Nagisa’s maternal feelings grow from there. It is set in the Shinjuku nightclub district.
Honestly, the original articles description sounded transphobic, but I’m not sure if that’s the writer of the article’s fault or the fault of the translation, so I’ll hold out hope that it’s the translation.
The film is an original work written by director Uchida, who works on topical works such as “Naked Director” distributed on Netflix and the movie “The Love of the Lower”, which uncovered the dark part of the Japanese movie world. Shooting has started from late October, mainly in Tokyo and the suburbs of Kanto.
