News Sushi #95: Morsels of News from Japan and Beyond

News Sushi #95 And we (Hamish) keep serving the best News Sushi!
Hooray!
Editor Note:It is Friday and that means it is time for the World Famous, soon to be Intergalactic Famous, News Sushi from our very own, Hamish Downie. Hamish brings us a decidedly different slant on Pop Culture as viewed through the lens of a non-native living in Japan.

Thank you (ありがとうございました) Hamish, for your insights.

こんにちは!Which means “Hello”!

I’m back from my summer/winter vacation (it’s confusing when you live in Japan, but return to your home country – so is it my winter or summer vacation – I can’t decide). Australia is in chaos at the moment with the nationwide fires. If you’d like to support the efforts of the firefighters (thanks to all the volunteers from Australia, and the US and Canadian Firefighters who are coming to help us out), or help the animals – follow this link:

I was near the fires in the Blue Mountains, but, luckily, the first day was the worst of it. I was glued to ABC24 news and watching with horror. I was lucky enough to be able to go to Nelson Bay, a beautiful coastal town with white sand beaches. It was relatively unaffected there, but the smoke haze still reached even there (they say it has reached New Zealand).

On a personal note, I got to stay at a lovely resort in Cairns when Jetstar cancelled my flight due to a lightening strike (we are experiencing dry lightening in Australia at the moment, which isn’t helping the fires).

I stayed at this lovely place:

Which felt a little like I got a prize on one of those 1980s game shows. I admit I felt at bit stuck there, as I really wanted to get back home to my partner who was preparing something for my birthday, but it’s hard to get sympathy when you say to people, “I’m stuck at a Tropical Resort”.

Anyway, here’s this week’s links! Hope you enjoy!

Lesbians don’t get talked about nearly enough… to address this, here is a lovely video highlighting the three biggest events in Osaka for our Sapphic Sisters…

Congratulations to Felicity, who’s film “Impossible to Imagine” has won a special award from the Shinjuku World Film Festival!

Thanks to Felicity, I learned that there may not be enough snow for the annual snow festival this year. I’d heard about this in regards to the slopes at the ski resort areas, but I hadn’t thought about the implications with regards to the festival!

Lexi of Flirting with Travel (web series coming soon), who is embarking on a 30 countries before 30 trip, takes this amazing photo in front of a church.
