News Sushi #98: Morsels of News from Japan and Beyond

News Sushi #97 And we (Hamish) keep serving the best News Sushi!
Hooray!
Editor Note:It is Friday and that means it is time for the World Famous, soon to be Intergalactic Famous, News Sushi from our very own, Hamish Downie. Hamish brings us a decidedly different slant on Pop Culture as viewed through the lens of a non-native living in Japan.

Thank you (ありがとうございました) Hamish, for your insights.

こんにちは!Which means “Hello”!

News Sushi is back!!!

Two things really caused this. First, so many people I know are doing amazing creative works… so, I wanted to interview them and support them. The second thing was that I felt like I didn’t know what to tell people during a time where Japan was trying to pretend that everything was A-OK as the IOC wasn’t letting Japan delay the Olympics. Thanks to all the countries who had the integrity to say they weren’t going to send their athletes to force the IOC to make the decision it needed to make.

Someone made a really interesting infographic on Reddit which explains things really well.

My view of Japan’s Covid-19 Timeline from r/japan

But, we all know we’re living in strange days.

So, here’s a few things to keep your mind off the calamity of modern life…

Chris Watts, who’s featured in a couple of my interview series, “5 Questions” has made a quarantine (did anyone know how to spell this word until this year – not me) film, “Mate”:

A harmless game of chess. What could possibly go wrong? Written, produced & directed by Chris Watt

Maybe we should all make a quarantine film.

Just about everyone I know… including me… has a podcast now, so here’s my recommendations to keep you entertained while self-isolating…

First up, News Sushi favourite… Kaori Takee has a podcast on Wrestlemania:

I’m doing a podcast called “Pop & Fizz” with my friend Bec, which comes out fortnightly, and is a comic take on movies and pop culture. We have a chat and a good time, plus, we introduce movies to each other and decide whether it’s a Pop (i.e. we want to see it) or a Fizz (i.e. we weren’t convinced). It’s on Anchor and Spotify now.

And here’s our fun header for twitter created by Bec…

Okay, that’s enough self promotion… but do know that I sing Cher and Bec does an amazing Olive Oil voice.

Also, another favourite of mine here at News Sushi, Michael Chan has a podcast, “Talking with our mouths full” which before the lockdown, was him and his co-host going to restaurants and interviewing people and talking about food. So, in other words, I’m desperate to get on the show (fine – I just want to eat the food). Now, they are ordering take-out and getting home delivery and talking to each other via the wonders of the internet.

This week, they are interviewing cinematographer,Brittany Nguyen:

Finally, the costume designer (Lexee) on my short film, “An American Piano” has a fabulous podcast on travelling, this week, she and her sister talk about expat living:

And Paul, the director of said short film, has a review up on youtube for all those interested in cameras, it’s a nice one!

HOT LINKS OF THE WEEK

The Crew of RunAway Japan bare all in this episode showing an open-air hot spring…

And that’s all for this week. Stay safe, stay at home, and wash you hands!

(Gosh, I wish he’d learn how to glue down his lace-front wig – it’s distracting once you notice it)

「またきんようびね!」
