こんにちは!Which means “Hello”!

Hello readers, it’s great to see you. I hope you enjoy this week’s society pages for the housebound i.e. News Sushi 🙂

I’m really pleased to be able to say that my feature film is – for all intents and purposes – finished! I look forward to sharing it with all
of you over the coming year. It’s a cliche, but it’s certainly been a journey making it!

What do you think of the saying, “if you love your job, you’ll never work a day in your life”? It sounds pretty good in theory, but I’m
starting to think if you turn your hobby into your job, it’ll drain any pleasure you have in it. I’m trying to reverse that for movies,
over the past decade, I’ve barely had time to watch films or even the desire to watch films as I’ve been making them. Recently, I got into
“Stardust” and “Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse”, both of which I really enjoyed.

Going back even further, I’ve been getting into drawing again. Just as a hobby. I mostly gave it up 20 years ago as I noticed that everything was going digital. Also, one of my drawings got stolen, and it drained a lot of the passion I had for drawing. It didn’t help that that
happened around the same time as I was getting stalked as a Drag Artist, so starting a fear of success that’s been hard to shake.

Thankfully, I’m making a journey back to drawing and art. My partner recently commented that the only time I’m really quiet is when I’m
eating or drawing. So, I think I’m going to continue this drawing thing.

Here’s the first one I did:

data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/CLY2vUcgI5X/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="13" style=" background:#FFF; border:0; border-radius:3px; box-shadow:0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width:540px; min-width:326px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% - 2px); width:calc(100% - 2px);">

This I did as a bit of fan art for a short story by Ali Naro, which you can read here:

You can also see the final version of the drawing on the website.

I also made this drawing for her other short story (you might be seeing a theme – yes, my drawings do look like old McCalls patterns –
that’s thanks to my training as a fashion illustrator):

data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/CMJEqBGgYg-/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="13" style=" background:#FFF; border:0; border-radius:3px; box-shadow:0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width:540px; min-width:326px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% - 2px); width:calc(100% - 2px);">

And you can read the story by Ali Naro that this inspired here:

Finally, author PJ SELAROM asked me to do some fan art of my favourite character from his Jode series, so I made this of Swen, his Genie
character:

Thanks to Amazon deleting many of the indie films off of their catalogue, Cody Clarke has uploaded his feature film to youtube, and I hope you and I can enjoy “Mute Date” this week:

A man and a woman go on a blind date in order to beta test a groundbreaking new technology that allows them to speak to each other telepathically. Produced, Written, Directed and Edited by Cody Clarke. Starring Anthony Kapfer, Nina Tandilashvili, Sarah Teed, Anna Fikhman.
Budget: $500. A Kill The Lion Films production.

I’ve tried to stay away from what typically gets written about Japan, but sometimes you can’t ignore it despite your best efforts… so here
is a Geisha wearing a mask (Gion has been affected by the pandemic just as every form of entertainment has):

data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/CJbYFjbg_P2/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="13" style=" background:#FFF; border:0; border-radius:3px; box-shadow:0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width:540px; min-width:326px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% - 2px); width:calc(100% - 2px);">

And finally, here is my HOT LINK OF THE WEEK!

data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/CLzSndwhbp4/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="13" style=" background:#FFF; border:0; border-radius:3px; box-shadow:0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width:540px; min-width:326px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% - 2px); width:calc(100% - 2px);">

I and a lot of expats living in Asia haven’t stood up and said more about what’s happening in American with the Asian community. And I
apologise for that. It might seem trivial, but as Asian men are rarely seen in media as attractive, this is my little salmon swimming
upstream – showcasing attractive Asian men. It’s not just the “Page 3 girl” of this column.

There, go out and be kind to each other.

Love,
Hamish in Japan
