Hamish Downie’s Five Questions With Ace Artemis
Hamish came up with this idea because he was accumulating too much material for his Famous News Sushi column and asked if he could do these mini-interviews. Why would we say no?
Thank you Hamish for being such a trooper for us. We really appreciate all for your hard work.
Let us know what you think of these interviews in the comments below.
TGG: Could you tell us about yourself?
AA: Hi, I’m Kate she/her asexual, I am a bench jeweller by day, fan-artist by night. In my free time I love hiking, cooking, reading, and drawing book characters that I love. I am a self-taught illustrator, my social media name is Ace Artemis.
TGG: What inspired you to get into illustration?
AA: Books and fan-art of book characters. A lot of what has inspired me to read certain books is the fan-art I see on social media. After reading books that I love I’ve wanted to get character ideas and scenes out of my head and on paper. I also love hearing that my art has helped someone find a new book that they love.

TGG: What’s your favourite book series to do fan art for?
AA: Oh goodness, a lot. The ones I revisit the most are The Raven Cycle, The Tarot Sequence, Carry On, Witchmark, Parasol Protectorate, The Watchmaker of Filigree Street, Graceling, etc.

TGG: Can you tell us about your collaboration with Rainbow Crate?
AA: Rainbow Crate is great to work with. They let me have free rein on most of what I do. After they decide on the book for a month (and they let me know 3-4 months before that box) I read said book, make notes, and bookmark scenes that I find inspiring, and then discuss with them ideas I have for it’s art print, and once an idea is agreed upon I draw it.
