Andrea’s Angle | “P!NK: All I Know So Far”: Authentic Portrait of a Talented Woman
P!NK: All I Know So Far is a documentary directed by Michael Gracey centering on singer-songwriter P!nk. It follows P!nk on her “Beautiful Trauma” tour as she balances being a performer with her role as a mother, wife, and boss, mixing footage from the road with behind-the-scenes interviews and personal materials. On the tour, P!nk played 156 shows in 18 countries. We get to meet both her children, Willow and Jameson, as well as her husband Corey Hart as they manage being a family with the demands of the road. Along with her family, we see behind the scenes of her practices and pieces of her various shows.
As a documentary, one of the aspects this film does superbly is in blending the personal with the professional. It is rare to see behind the curtain of any singer’s personal life and in this movie, they do so seamlessly, blending moments with her children, eating, living in hotels, and exploring and tagging along as P!nk goes to her practices and performances. This blend creates a powerful connection to P!nk and her family, highlights her hard work and her beautiful music. Whether by design or because it is natural to who she is, the film also presents a very warm and loving view of her and illustrates a woman who works hard and is respectful to her family and those she works with on her shows.
Truthfully, it is the subject of the documentary as much as the filming that causes this movie to be so beautiful. Right from the beginning, when P!nk interacts with hotel staff, she treats those around her with respect and kindness. With her children, she models language and listens to them. As a mother, she likely isn’t perfect and freely admits it but there is love and respect for her children and it is clear that she and her husband have created a safe, loving environment for their children, even when they are on the road, one that is both playful and structured, but also allows for individuality. When her husband speaks of her and looks at her, there is love in his eyes and that warmth creates a solid foundation for their family.
We also get many personal interviews with P!nk in the movie. She speaks of her desires for her children and it is clear she only wants them to be happy. She speaks of her philosophies in life, that you choose your lessons in life. And those philosophies resonate and demonstrate a caring and passionate individual. When she speaks of the performers she works with, she clearly is loyal and cares about them as people, not just as a boss. She understands that you find and keep good people by your side by treating them well and making them feel safe. And she’d rather have good people by her side. She is able to separate out her ego and isn’t fearful of others’ talent and greatness. In fact, she looks for those individuals who are as passionate as she is.
The film feels authentic and real because she doesn’t paint herself as perfect and doesn’t take herself seriously. She is harder on herself than others and works hard for her performances because she is aware of the impact that she has on her fans. She still does it for that very reason. As the film continues, we get to see firsthand the work that she puts in as well as her music. And the messages in her music are part of what creates a connection. It is an almost irresistible combination, meeting this individual on her tour and hearing her music.
If you are a fan of P!nk, you will definitely want to see this film. It highlights her talent and warmth, as well as providing an inside look at her day-to-day life while on tour. For the aspects that deal with her family alone, it is worth it. If you aren’t a fan, I highly encourage you to watch this documentary to understand the work that goes into being a performer, and by the time you finish, you will be a fan. It will send audiences clamoring for her music, and for me personally, I fell in love with her personality, her beliefs, and her voice.
