Hamish Downie’s Five Questions With Nicole Kilpatrick
Hamish came up with this idea because he was accumulating too much material for his Famous News Sushi column and asked if he could do these mini-interviews. Why would we say no?
Thank you Hamish for being such a trooper for us. We really appreciate all for your hard work.
Let us know what you think of these interviews in the comments below.
TGG: Could you tell us about yourself?
NK: My name is Nicole Kilpatrick. I was born and raised in the Philippines but have been living in New York for about 18 years now. I work at the United Nations, and in my free time, I read–a lot. I guess you could say I’m a big-time book-geek. Last year, one of my life-long dreams finally came true when my debut novel, Clover, was published by Fire & Ice Young Adult Books.
TGG: Could you tell us about your debut novel, “Clover”?
NK: Clover is a reimagining of leprechaun lore. In my book, they are powerful, handsome creatures—not the typical way in which they’re depicted. At its core, Clover is an adventure and a love story that is appealing not only to teens, but readers of all ages. It’s a story I’ve been wanting to write for quite some time. In 2017, I finally took the plunge and tried my hand at writing my first novel. I am beyond ecstatic that readers worldwide are now able to read and enjoy what was merely an iota of an idea just a few years ago. I’m also extremely happy to share that Clover is a finalist for the prestigious 2021 Rone Award in the YA category, along with two great books written by very talented authors, Mark Rosenberg and Casey L. Bond.
TGG: What’s something that you learned while writing the book?
NK: I learned that it’s extremely difficult to write a novel while working a full-time job and at the same time trying not to get distracted by things like Netflix, long naps, Family Guy, and happy hour. Despite this, I also learned that it’s an immensely rewarding endeavor and I’m so glad that I didn’t quit when the going got tough and that I stuck to my dream. I learned that writing, like any other craft, needs to be honed and that there’s always room for improvement. Most importantly, I learned that once you set your mind to something, all it takes are little baby steps each and every single day, and before you know it, your goals have been accomplished and your dreams are within reach.
TGG: What’s next for you?
NK: I’m so thrilled that the sequel to Clover, Fae’s Ascent, is coming out in the fall of 2021. I’m very excited about this. I love how the story continues in this next book, and I can’t wait for my readers to get their hands on it. Also, the Clover audiobook will be coming out sometime in the fall too. Lots of exciting things!
I’m currently working on a new project and if the Netflix and happy hour gods are in my favor, hopefully I’ll have a new book out by next year. In the meantime, I’m just loving every moment of having my debut novel, Clover, out in the world.
TGG: How can we best support you?
NK: I’d love to engage with all of you on social media (links below) and am also sharing the buy links to Clover. Thanks so much!
