Hamish Downie’s News Sushi # 134: Morsels of News From Japan and Beyond
Hooray! More News Sushi for you to enjoy!
Editor Note:It is Friday and that means it is time for the World Famous, soon to be Intergalactic Famous, News Sushi from our very own, Hamish Downie. Hamish brings us a decidedly different slant on Pop Culture as viewed through the lens of a non-native living in Japan.
Thank you (ありがとうございました) Hamish, for your insights.
こんにちは!Which means “Hello”!
How’s everyone’s preparations for Halloween going? We’d already bought our costumes and candy months ago. My partner and I don’t go out, we just dress up and have fun at home, and of course, we watch Linus try to get the Peanuts gang to join his cult aka The Great Pumpkin.
Japan, like Australia, has only recently gotten into the American tradition of Halloween. I have to say we are all pretty rusty. Since the pandemic, they’ve closed down the Shibuya Halloween parties, which were just a few of us foreign expats 16 years ago, and grew steadily to such a massive event that I made sure to avoid it at all costs. So, who knows, it may be back this year… that’s what happens when you have a society column written by an introvert.
Universal Studios Japan has a massive zombie event, and usually has the Resident Evil (or as it’s known here, Biohazard) walkthrough maze.

I’ve done it, and I can’t say that I’m rushing to go back again. I do enjoy the movies (not the recent reboot), though.
We saw some Jack-O-Lantern ready pumpkins at the supermarket tonight (as of writing), which were nearly 8000 yen (US $53) each. I can’t say I want one when it’s not edible. But, there’s a girl on twitter who’s been terrorizing the neighrbourhood with her Jack-o-latern which has gotten creepier as it’s aged:

Have you ever tried making a Jack-O-Lantern? Comment below!
Some local cats have been getting into the spirit of things (hehe pun intentional) with these spooky felines:

It’s actually the cats checking that their human is okay while taking a shower, and looking through the frosted glass. I hope that’s a waterproof camera!
Tim O’Leary, who I’ve interviewed for 5 Questions, has a new queer horror short out for Halloween… be warned, there is some nudity, but I’m sharing it here for those of you who wish to watch:
Youtube is going to tell you it’s age-restricted and you have to watch it over on their site, sorry.
Speaking of Horror Shorts, in light of the recent announcement by Konami of a new Silent Hill movie and series of games, here is my little fan film that could:
Have a great and safe halloween! Even if you are waiting for the Great Pumpkin to answer your letters.
Happy Halloween!
